Château Latour--Vintage 1964
Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Lot 227 in one-magnum original wooden cases
VINTAGE NOTE: 1964 was one of those years where hopes ran high. Edmund Penning Rowsell relates that the French Minister of Agriculture called 1964 the vintage of the century in August, before the picking started! The year had a solid budbreak and flowering followed by a hot, dry growing season to concentrate the fruit. Rain began on the 8th of October, spoiling the vintage for those that did not pick early. The best wines of 1964 have a lovely "brown sugar" nose to them, a sweet fruit character, and a rich, lush texture.
"Its nose and taste opened up, demonstrating its flesh and rich character through the 1980s. It goes on and on gaining extra dimensions. On the last three occasions a marvellous mouthful, plump, perfectly balanced, rounded and sweet yet still with a tannic finish." Michael Broadbent M.W., October 2000
"At Jim Craig's Latour dinner, Beverly Hills, and several times since. Garnet-red of medium depth, the nose fragrant, cedary and open, with old-style Cabernet character (by which I mean: picked less ripe than we see today). The palate is rich, with vibrant middle fruit and fresh tannins, now melted - a lovely wine, fully ready." Anthony Hanson M.W., October 2003
