Château Latour--Vintage 1959
Pauillac, 1er cru classé. Château-bottled
Vintage note: 1959 was praised as the Vintage of the Century before 1961 was hailed again, whilst they had very different growing conditions and wine characters as a result. 1959 was a very hot year. These wines are super-ripe and low in acidity, but have lasted very well. The growing conditions have produced a wine that is ripe and soft, yet concentrated and long. Lafite, Latour, Mouton and Haut-Brion have all made extraordinary wine, although this was not the best period for Margaux.

"Dark garnet with an amber edge, the 1959 Latour reveals a touch of volatile acidity in the nose, along with aromas of melted caramel, tobacco, and jammy red and black fruits. As the wine sat in the glass, notes of minerals, coffee, spice, and underbrush emerged. There is still copious tannin in the finish (I am not sure it will ever be fully resolved), but this sumptuous, complex, fragrant, super-rich Latour cuts a broad swath across the palate." 96 points, Robert Parker, June 2000

"A glorious mammoth wine. It just goes from strength to strength. Initially a black purple colour, nose packed with fruit, full-bodied, its extract and sheer power seeming to absorb, partially to disguise its tannic intensity...More recently, showing no signs of flagging, its opacity merely prefacing its beautifully developed bouquet, excellent flavour and perfect balance - perfect enough to keep up the maturing process for another quarter century." Michael Broadbent M.W., December 2000

"It was a revelation, with rich, lush black fruit on the nose and hints of baking spices alongside elegant notes of cedar, smoke and a hint of black truffle. On the palate the wine was almost shockingly youthful, with a seamless, creamy texture, full body and an amazing finish. The wine lingered on the palate, continuing to evolve in the glass, and offering pretty licorice and black cherry notes an hour after pouring. This wine illustrates the triumph of finesse over raw power. All indications are age appropriate, but notes of cedar and licorice develop only after time in the glass. Marvellous wine. Another 20 years?" Charles Curtis M.W., October 2008
