This watch is fitted with a "virgule" escapement , usually credited to J.A Lepaute around 1753. It was used in France in the last quarter of the 18th century and during the early years of the 19th. It derived its name from the shape of the moving part of the balance staff, resembling a "comma" or "virgule" in French.
