The lives of rural women was a longstanding theme of B. Prabha's work wherein she explored an array of related subjects alluding to society, identity and gender. By successfully capturing delicate features, supple slender bodies and elongated forms, she chose to throw light on the daily struggle and trauma faced by women in Indian villages. This painting is a searing depiction of the desperation of an impoverished mother with her two children as they stare out of the canvas, captivating and drawing the viewer inti their lives. The painting recalls the Expressionist works by the German artist Kaethe Kollwitz, who shared a similar concern for the human condition. This painting is unique in style for Prabha, delineated in the most lyrical gray and monochromatic tones.
