In 1970, Ram Kumar received the prestigious Rockefeller grant which enabled him to study in the US. Using his stipend, Ram Kumar traveled extensively in England, Spain, Italy as well as throughout the US and Mexico before returning to India. The abstracted landscapes from his 70s works signified a change in the artist's style whereas before he devised tightly composed architectonic structures, his looser brushstrokes heralded a new series of open and barren landscapes likely inspired by these travels.
