In 1859 Whistler took residence in the bustling neighbourhood of Wapping, the centre of London's thriving maritime trade. From that vantage point he made a fascinating series of etchings of the Thames River, a subject which he revisited regularly throughout his life. These studies formed the basis of A Series of Sixteen etchings of Scenes on the Thames and other subjects, known as the Thames Set. The set was not formally published until 1871, but impressions printed by Delâtre or by the artist himself were exhibited at Whistler's first solo exhibition in 1861. The impressions included in this lot are printed on antique papers and are sensitively wiped, typical of proofs printed before steel-facing and prior to publication.
