The case of the present watch is a fine and very attractive example for the delicate filigree or openwork decoration, particularly popular in in the early 17th century. Its appeal is furthermore enhanced by the diamond and enamel floral ornament in high relief, also characteristically for the period.
The movement, dial and pendant have been replaced in the mid-18th century, a typical feature often found in early watches.
For the illustration of a comparable filigree gold, enamel and diamond-set Renaissance watch case see The Camerer Cuss Book of Antique Watches by T.P. Camerer Cuss, second edition, pp. 16 & 17.
