The present watch is a highly unusual variant of Rolex's celebrated Oysterquartz Day-Date, introduced into the market in the 1970s. More commonly known in stainless steel, stainless steel and gold or entirely in gold, small series were also available with gem-set dials, bezels and/or bracelets, attributed reference no. 19078.

A hybrid of the Oysterquartz model reference 19000, distinguished by the unusual texture of the bracelet, the links of the central row showing the so-called "hobnail pattern", consisting of small pyramid-shaped cubes, and reference 19078, it was upgraded upon special request probably by the first owner with the present, highly unusual bezel, set with graduated rainbow-coloured gems and a gilt brushed dial with matching multi-gem numerals, lending it a very unique look. The multi-gem-set bezel and dial were standard equipment for the Oysterquartz reference 19058.
