This exquisite wisteria painting was executed by Qi Baishi in 1940, when the artist was 77 years old. Wisteria vines climb by twining their stems round any available support and hence do not grow in any designated pattern. Its depiction requires superb and meticulous skill both in rendering the flower, the leaf, the vine, as well as the handling of the composition so it does not appear chaotic amidst intertwining vines; it is particularly challenging for larger configurations, such as this present lot.
In Wisteria and Bees, Qi's mastery of ink is once again attested in his depiction of vines of varying strengths and intensities by the use of dry and wet ink. These vines contrast and complement the flowers and the leaves, forming the backbone of the painting. With simple vines, vivid bright colours and two bees, Qi illuminates the sensation of the spring season and is typical of his wisteria paintings in the 1940s. It also demonstrates his maturity in this subject matter over a period of 20 years.
