In this rare example of a combined work by two members of the Brücke, the image itself is cut by Kirchner, the text by Heckel.
The poster advertises the first exhibition in Munich to be solely devoted to the Brücke-artists. Two earlier exhibitions in Munich had included some works by the Brücke together with works by the Blauer Reiter and others. It was held in January 1913 at Paul Ferdinand Schmidt's and Max Dietzel's Neue Kunstsalon and included paintings, drawings, prints, sculptures and decorative arts by Heckel, Kirchner, Mueller and Schmidt-Rottluff. Max Pechstein had already left the group in spring 1912. It was to be the penultimate exhibition of the Brücke: after eight years, the artists' association was finally dissolved on 27 May 1913.
We are grateful to Professor Dr. Günther Gercken, Lütjensee, Germany, for his assistence in cataloguing this lot. Professor Gercken is currently preparing the new catalogue raisonné of prints by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. Gercken records eight impressions of the present second and final state, with the artist's names added. Three of these are in public collections: in the Kunstbibliothek, Berlin; the Kupferstich-Kabinett, Dresden; and the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart. A unique impression of the first state is in the Collection Hermann Gerlinger, Moritzburg, Halle.
