The present "Ovettone" must be considered at the very top of an all time dream collection in the category of Rolex "time only" wristwatches. Blessed with the largest Oyster case from the 1950s, it is highlighted by what many consider the most beautiful dial design ever made by the famous Geneva firm.
The dial surface is black lacquer with an incredible shine and depth hardly ever seen on any other wristwatch. The signature, writing and scale are gold colour of different tones and beautifully harmonize with the case metal. The hour markers in the shape of five-pointed stars, by far the most exclusive and desirable type, centred by a luminous dot.
Reference 6098 was made in the very same period, the early 1950s, as the ultimate Rolex model, reference 6062. The latter, featuring a full calendar and moon phases, is also known as the "Stelline", as a small handful of examples in yellow and pink gold feature star-shaped hour indexes. These watches are, in good condition, the ultimate Rolex model and demand prices equivalent to a proper semi-detached family home.
The present reference 6098 will not need to hide next to any exquisite triple calendar reference 6062, though missing the extra complication, but more than compensating thanks to its perfect harmony and sheer beauty of its black star dial. The most beautiful and prominent black dialled reference 6062 must be the celebrated "Bao Dai" - also standing out with a black lacquer dial but featuring diamond markers instead of the star-shaped indexes.
The condition of this watch is "as good as it gets" with extremely crisp case lines and both serial and reference numbers perfectly preserved in between the lugs. This 6098 consequently is a highly exceptional opportunity for any discerning collector to acquire a spectacular and probably irreplaceably rare wristwatch.
