Born in Bern, Martha Stettler moved to Paris in 1893 and by 1902 had founded the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Not wishing to adhere to the restrictive academic rules of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Stettler provided an alternative venue where artists could express themselves freely, paving the way to l'Art Indépendant. Among her teachers was Emile-Antoine Bourdelle, who taught sculpture there from 1909-1929.
