Wondering Angel Insects

Rina Banerjee creates magical and mystical works laced with pseudo-spiritual imagery. Banerjee has been noted as one of the 50 next most collectible artists in the most recent issue of Art + Auction alongside Bharti Kher. This year, she will be participating in the exhibition India: Art Now at the Arken Museum, Copenhagen (August 2012 -- January 2013) and she will be the only other Indian artist, alongside Dayanita Singh, to show at the Asia Pacific Triennale of Contemporary Art, Queensland (December 2012 -- April 2013). Her most recent past exhibitions include her solo exhibition at the Musée Guimet, Paris (2011) and the Yokohama Triennial, Our Magic Hour, Japan curated by Akiko Miki (2011).
In her enchanted compositions that reflect her love for substance, fabric and texture, "[...] Banerjee applies the exquisite detail of Indian miniature painting to fantastical scenes that blend mythological imagery from a range of cultural and historical sources." ('50 Next Most Collectible Artists', Art + Auction, June 2012, unpaginated) In Wondering Angel Insects, Banerjee recreates an aquatic world where strange mythical creatures float across the composition interspersed with depictions of flora and fauna. This work captures Banerjee's ability to convey natural fluidity between abstraction and narration.
