A multi-disciplinary artist working in painting, sculpture, murals, architecture as well as interior design, Satish Gujral continues to challenge the notions of Indian art. In 1952, Gujral was awarded a scholarship to travel to Mexico, and during this time he worked under the leadership of David Siqueiros and Diego Rivera, whose mural techniques continue to inspire the multi-textural qualities and underlying symbolisms in Gujral's works.
In this work, Gujral employs his distinctive sense of surface quality by using mixed media collage technique to depict two whimsical characters. Each of these figures incorporate typesetting and visual references of the 1960s in their voluminous bodies, whose bizarre and fantastical proportion inject a sense of humor and comedy into the composition. With earthy tones combined with bright rich colors referencing Gujral's Mexican past, the two characters come alive in a joyful manifestation of rhythm and grace.
