Château Latour--Vintage 1929
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Corroded capsules, one damaged. One slightly bin-soiled, three badly bin-soiled and damaged and one badly bin-soiled and slightly damaged label. Levels: one top, one upper, two mid/upper and one mid-shoulder. In carton
Tasting Note: Superlative. Softer and more amenable than the' 28. Sixteen notes, almost all 5-stars, dating from December 1955. (I had moved that autumn from Saccone & Speed to Harvey's of Bristol, and was based in London.) Always deeply coloured, it bouquet variously described - mainly inadequately - as rich but restrained old cedar, spicy (eucalyptus once again, cloves and sage), 'medicinal' Pauillac, and so forth. On the palate generally sweet, soft and luscious for Latour - a complete contrast to the monumental and tannic '28 - velvety, elongated. More recently a perfect magnum in a 'flight' of Latours. Last noted Dec 1995 ***** M.B.
