The third of the great trio of port-war vintages. Wines of greatly style, avoiding some of the constraints and excesses of the concentrated' 45s and the ripe and more opulent '47s. An almost unprecedented heatwave, 43? C recorded in the Médoc on the 11 July. Finally, a late harvest in the fine weather. The best are still superb but living precariously; storage and provenance are vital. M.B.
