Fonseca--Vintage 1948
Embossed-wax capsules, some slightly damaged. Replacement labels. Believed Oporto-bottled. Some slightly shrunken corks, but no leakage detected. levels: ten base of neck or better, one top and one just below top-shoulder. In carton
Tasting Note: Sixteen notes. At 20 to 30 years of age all good, 'fruity', perfectly balanced. An impressively deep J&B bottling in 1979 but, in 1988 the most unusual of all (but see Dow '45) in a Burgundy magnum bottled by Harveys in Bristol in 1950, with fully branded cork. Most recently, also English-bottled, now medium-pale with a fully evolved, mature rim. Though showing its age, opened up in the glass fragrantly. Great depth. Very sweet, liquorice taste, fleshy, with power and length yet elegant. Last tasted May 2003 **** M.B.
