FROM THE COLLECTION OF AN ITALIAN ARTIST
In June 1956, Ampelio Tettamanti (1914-1961), a member of a delegation of important Italian artists, came to China for a cultural exchange. An exhibition of these Italian artists' works was held at the Museum of Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, during which they met with various Chinese artists, including Qi Baishi. Tettamanti became friends with Qi and they spent a few days together. He painted a portrait of Qi Baishi as a present. In return, Qi offered him Smartweed and Quails as a farewell gift. Since then, this work, together with the two paintings purchased by Tettamanti - Pavilion by the Sea and New Year Offerings, have been with the Tettamanti family in Italy, a precious memory of the artist's journey to China.
