Kwon Ki-Soo received his BFA and MFA from Hong-Ik University, Seoul in 1996 and 1998. Kwon had about 20 solo shows globally and has been actively participating in numerous international exhibitions at the notable institutes such as La Biennale di Venezia, Venice, Museum of Art and Design, New York, Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei, Mori Museum of Art, Tokyo, among many others. Kwon's works are well known for their exuberant colours, flower patterns extracted from the Four Gracious Plants, long-lasting themes in traditional Asian painting, and his trademark charming smiling character, "Dong-Gu-Ri." In Red Table (Lot 467), featured here, the whole space is dominated by a red coloured background which makes time and space ambiguous. Seven Dong-Gu-Ris seating at the grey table filled with Kwon's characteristic plum blossom pattern and water-waves enhance the ambiguous atmosphere, evoking the viewer Zhulinqixian, seven hermits who turned their backs against the politically corrupted world. The red background is so strong and overwhelming that the audience almost doesn't notice that the colour of the table is actually grey. With the intentionally wrong title, Red Table, Kwon seems to mischievously challenge to prove how easily we can be deceived by our own unconscious perception process.
