This composition relates to Rubens' design for a tapestry in the Royal Monastery of Las Descalzas Reales, Madrid. A preliminary sketch for the tapestry is in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge; a subsequent modello is in the Prado, Madrid; and a large, painted cartoon is in the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota, Florida (J.S. Held, op. cit., pp. 157-158, nos. 109-110, figs. 112-113). This painting relates most closely in design to the modello in the Prado, although it excludes the baroque architectural framing, swags of fruit, trumpets and cherubs.
