Dear Guests:
You are reading this catalogue because of your passion for the arts, a passion that I share with you. As a long-time supporter of Human Rights Watch, I wanted to bring my expertise--contemporary art--to support a cause I deeply believe in. Human Rights Watch's mission, methodology and impact continue to inspire me and I hope this auction will be able to raise the organization's profile in the art world.
This benefit auction has been made possible by a number of generous contributions from artists, galleries and collectors. I want to extend my deep gratitude to the following persons:
Doug Aitken, Francis Alÿs, Fischli & Weiss, Wade Guyton, Jenny Holzer, Rashid Johnson, Karen Kilimnik, Albert Oehlen, Mai-Thu Perret, Jaume Plensa, Richard Prince, Gerhard Richter, Josh Smith, Thomas Struth, Rebecca Warren, the Estate of Franz West, and Christopher Williams. Eva Presenhuber, Peter Kilchmann, Francesca Pia from Zurich; Maureen Paley, Iwan Wirth from London; Luhring Augustine from New York; Max Hetzler and Gisela Capitaine from Berlin; Paul Gray from Chicago; John Studzinski, Ellen and Michael Ringier, and Hesta AG Zug / Thomas and Ruedi Bechtler.
I am also extending my gratitude to Christie's staff Prof. Dirk Boll and Sara Friedlander as well as to the Human Rights Watch Staff Brigitte Schmid and Miriam Mahlow.
Thank you all very much for your commitment to the cause of human rights and for supporting Human Rights Watch.
Sincerely,
Cristina Bechtler, Zurich
Human Rights Watch is one of the world's leading independent organizations dedicated to defending and protecting human rights. By focusing international attention where human rights are violated, we give voice to the oppressed and hold oppressors accountable for their crimes. Our rigorous, objective investigations and strategic, targeted advocacy build intense pressure for action and raise the cost of human rights abuse. For more than 30 years, Human Rights Watch has worked tenaciously to lay the legal and moral groundwork for deep-rooted change and has fought to bring greater justice and security to people around the world.
