"Like Johns' flags and targets, the logos on cigarette packages and cigar boxes were ready-made images, instantly recognizable as flat by definition. However Rivers' interpretation of these images in a painterly style highlighting his skill as a draftsman makes the point that his paintings are unique, hand-painted originals, not to be confused with photographs or reproductions."
