In 1950, the industrial designer, Henry Dreyfus commissioned Lyonel Feininger to design a 42-foot mural for the first class dining room on the American Export Lines steamer U.S.S. Constitution. Coast of Illusions was executed as part of the project and given by the artist to Andrei Hudiakoff, the stage designer who was the technical expert for this project.

Achim Moeller confirmed the authenticity of this work. The work will be registered in the archives of The Lyonel Feininger Project, New York - Berlin with the no. 1205-04-12-13.
