Ferdinand Richardt boarded the Washington steamer in Denmark and traveled to the United States in 1855. In that same year he made his first journey to Niagara, where he was inspired by the awe and grandeur of the falls. Moved by their majesty and the panoramic views, Richardt painted over one hundred views of Niagara Falls. While he painted famous American landmarks and landscapes such as the Mississippi River and Mammoth Cave, the scale of the falls and their natural glory became the focal point of Richardt's subject matter while in America.
