Vito Acconci created Hands Up Hands Down in the mid-1980s. It uses the photographs taken during his 'activity' of the afternoon of 12 October 1969, where he took two pictures in two deliberate movements. Seeking to make something that is reminiscent of a landscape, or a view glimpsed from a distance, Acconci has revisited this early performance piece, transforming a transient moment into something more permanent.
