Andre is, first and foremost, consciously extending the traditions of modernist sculpture. Though decision-making plays an unusually large role in all of Andre's work, he always gives equal importance to its materiality. 'My works are not the embodiments of ideas or conceptions', Andre once said. 'My works are, in the words of William Blake, 'The lineaments of Gratified Desire'
