The present watch has a nice vintage feel and look while being sufficiently large in diameter for the modern wearer. The black dial of this watch is intriguing, not only due to its charming reddish golden patina, which is testimony to its authenticity, but also due to its "ghost" retailer's signature. The name of the Swiss watch and jewellery company Bucherer appears just below the Rolex signature, though can now only be seen faintly when viewed up close, seemingly materializing out of nowhere. The faded name is further evidence that the dial has never undergone any cosmetic enhancement and has remained in original, unmolested condition. All gilt numerals, as well as the gilt fifths of a seconds divisions and the tracks on the subsidiary dial are clear and contrast nicely against the black dial.
Bucherer, the famous Swiss retailer with several branches across Switzerland and flagship stores in Germany, Austria and France, was established in 1888, celebrating its 125th birthday this year.
Reference 2508 was introduced to the market in the mid 1930s. The first generation featured oval chronograph buttons whereas the second series, such as the present watch, was fitted with rectangular pushers.
Different versions of reference 2508 are described and illustrated in I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 80-91.
