An Astrolabe is an instrument used to indicate the positions of the sun, moon, and stars as seen from Earth. The Ulysse Nardin Astrolabium is the only astrolabe watch designed to be worn on the wrist, and shows the wearer a number of accurate astronomical indications, of which a few are mentioned below.

The watch dial depicts the earth in a flat form, with a horizon line separating the silvered section from the light and dark grey sections below. When the measure edge of the sun and moon hands are in the silvered zone, the sun and/or moon are visible in the sky at that very moment (weather permitting). The "rete" is composed of the outer gold ring with the calendar months and the inner gold circle, which indicates the 12 signs of the Zodiac, and completes a full turn every year. The sign of the Zodiac is indicated by the measure of the sun hand. The blue dragon hand moves almost at the same speed as the rete, but makes an extra turn every 18.611 years. When it is aligned simultaneously with the sun and moon hands, it indicates a solar or lunar eclipse.
