Officine Panerai

Officine Panerai was founded in 1860 Giovanni Panerai, and became known for specializing in the production of highly precise optical and mechanical instruments, such as compasses and depth gauges, and eventually became the official supplier to the Royal Italian Navy. Starting in 1910, Officine Panerai began experimenting with different types of luminous materials to be used on their instruments, and eventually invented a substance known as "Radiomir", a mixture of sulphide and radium bromide. In 1935, the Royal Italian Navy approached Panerai with the request to design a watch that would be water resistant to extreme depths and would keep exact time. The first prototype Panerai submitted was called "Radiomir", for the luminous material used on the numerals, and upon passing all tests, a further order was placed and the watches were supplied to the forces as of 1938. Rolex made for Officine Panerai Reference 3646

Watches with the reference number 3646 featured Rolex hand-wound movements and waterproof cases, and were produced starting around 1938 until the 1950's. These watches featured a Rolex 16''' 618 Cortebert ebauche movement, because they were reliable in extreme conditions. The present watch is engraved on the case back XA FLOTMAS NO. 048, for the Decima Flottiglia Mas, or 10th Flotilla Assault Vehicle, an Italian commando frogman unit of the Royal Italian Navy. The frogmen of the Royal Italian Navy were specially trained in diving and swimming underwater for combat purposes. The first Italian frogman group originated in 1938, and became known as the 1A Flottiglia Mezzi d'Assalto, or 1st Flotilla Assault Vehicles. The tenth (or decima) group was formed around 1940.
