Around 1966/67, the reference 1680 introduced as the company's first Submariner model with date.

The reference 1680 Submariner with date was introduced to the market in 1969 in both stainless steel and 18k gold cases. Initially, the watch featured the metric system with meters first (200m=660ft), however in 1971, the dial was changed to read feet first (660ft=200m) to accommodate the market in the United States, which was becoming Rolex's largest market. Rolex did continue to use meters first dials, but mostly on stainless steel examples.

Ref. 1680 is prominently described and illustrated in Rolex Submariner Story by Franka & Guido Mondani and Lele Ravagnani, pp. 90-103.
