Having graduated from the Sir J.J. School of Art, Mumbai in 1996, Jitish Kallat has gone on to establish himself as one of the leading contemporary artists practicing in India today, forming a distinct style that spans the areas of painting, sculpture, video and photography. "Much of my work absorbs the twin codes of pop and agitprop, addressing some of the classic themes of art: birth, death, survival and the endless narratives of human struggle. The highly populated city of Mumbai, where I live, is almost a theatre where the codes of daily existence are pushed to the extreme and this continually percolates my practice." The use of text, which is very important to Jitish, infuses the painting with a sense of humour. The text reading RSVP (réspondez s'il vous plaît) appears to be an open call for a response from the viewer. "My art is more like a researcher's project who uses quotes rather than an essay, with each painting necessitating a bibliography," (Artist quote, Aicon Gallery, accessed on 1 November 2013)
Kallat has been included in a number of solo and group exhibitions, his most recent museum exhibition is Epilogue at the San Jose Museum of Art running until April 2014 and past exhibitions such as Fieldnotes: Tomorrow Was Here Yesterday at the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, Mumbai and Public Notice 3 at The Art Institute of Chicago (2010 - 2011). Other exhibitions include Thermocline of Art - New Asian Waves at the ZKM Museum in Karlsruhe (2007), the 5th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art in Australia (2006), the 6th Gwangju Biennale in Korea (2006) and at Century City at Tate Modern in London (2001).
