Vase-shape with a frieze of diagonal fluting between narrow foliate edges, the angular bifurcated handles with guilloche decoration, terminating in leafage, gilt interior, the cover rising to a central pedestal, the front chased in relief with an oval reserve depicting Arion holding his lyre standing atop a dolphin, the reverse side with a presentation inscription to The Reverend James MacDonald from a few select friends in London, dated 1803, on pedestal foot

Arion was a Greek poet of the 7th century B.C. famed for his skill on the lyre. On one of his travels, threatened with murder by the crew of the boat he was on, he jumped overboard and was carried safely to shore on the back of a dolphin attracted by his music.
