The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH) is honored to work with our brilliant colleagues at Christie's New York to offer the following exceptional works of art donated for the benefit of the Museum on the occasion of our 65th year of bringing the best in new art and ideas to Texas. The proceeds from this sale will help to support a dynamic program of special exhibitions and a wide range of related public programs. Founded in 1948, CAMH has played a vital role in making Houston one of America's top cities for contemporary arts and culture.
CAMH was founded to present new art and to document its role in modern life through exhibitions, lectures and other activities. The Museum's first exhibitions were presented at various sites throughout the city, such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and included This is Contemporary Art and L. Moholy-Nagy: Memorial Exhibition. CAMH's iconic stainless steel building opened in 1972 and has, over the last forty years, come to symbolize new art and ideas for more than a generation of Texans. Artists as diverse as John Chamberlain, Robert Mangold, Robert Rauschenberg, Ed Ruscha, Cindy Sherman, Pat Steir and Bill Viola had significant first or early shows here. Theaster Gates, Jonathan Horowitz, and Rob Pruitt have done significant special projects in recent years. And our tradition of giving significant scholarly shows to the artists making history today continues with upcoming exhibitions featuring Mark Flood, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Jennie C. Jones, and Marilyn Minter.
The incredible generosity of the donating artists and gallerists shown on the following pages clearly demonstrates the fact that CAMH is appreciated by the artists we serve. We know from the responses we received that CAMH's efforts to connect artwork to the diverse audiences that typify the city of Houston, as well as the international audience of art lovers that look to Houston for art getaways, are well known far and wide.
CAMH is among the earliest museums in America devoted exclusively to the contemporary in art, culture and thought, and is proud that we have remained a free, welcoming Museum that successfully attracts diverse audiences and serves as a type of town square, or gathering space, for the city of Houston. We know the future of museums will require investing in many new ways to better serve art, artists and audiences, and together with the arts community and our most generous supporters, this auction is one of the ways we are preparing for the demands ahead.
We must thank our trustees who helped assemble this list of artists and galleries: The Chair of our Gala Collector's Committee Barbara Gamson and her husband Michael Gamson, Leigh and Reggie Smith, and Sissy and Denny Kempner; and the spectacular grand dames of CAMH to whom we dedicate this anniversary year, Carol C. Ballard, Sissy Kempner, and Marilyn Oshman; as well as the co-chairs of the 65th anniversary Gala being held in Houston on April 4th, 2014, Susie and Sanford Criner and Marita and J.B. Fairbanks. But most of all we must thank the artists whose generosity both humbles us and helps us build for the future in countless ways in order to serve the generation yet to come.
