徐冰的《天书》计划始于1987 年,第一次展出于二十世纪八十年代末的北京中国美术馆。 天书,顾名思义是指那些无法被解读、被理解的深奥书籍。这套书籍,一套四册,以中国传统线装方式装订,遵循宋版印刷的风格,布满看似熟悉的中文方块字。这些被创造出的文字包含普通 的中文汉字边旁部首,如水字旁,土字旁等。但形成的文字却是不可识别的。徐冰认为正是由于各种矛盾与荒诞,使“读”的工作无法推进;但没有字典化的绝对解释,又使得对这些字符的解读具有了无限的空间。
