The reference 6036 offered here for sale is a spectacular example from the exceedingly small series of the iconic "Dato Compax" cased in pink gold to appear in public to date. Moreover distinguished by the red day and month indications in Italian, as opposed to the black printing of the regular versions, it is one of the most striking specimens of any Rolex chronograph model.
When purchased by its actual owner in this saleroom in 2010, the watch was sold with Gioielleria Laccu, Agente Ufficiale Rolex, Sassari, Italy original letter dated 1998 confirming that the present reference 6036 was made on the occasion of the 1956 Olympic Games - an information which until then was neither known to scholars nor published anywhere in literature.
Extensive research resulted in the discovery that the original owner of this reference 6036 was most likely no one less than the multiple wrestling champion Adalberto Lepri. A resident of Sassari, he was Italian wrestling champion for nine consecutive years (1950-1958), active participant at the Olympic Summer Games in Helsinki in 1952 and at the Istanbul World Wrestling Cup in 1956. According to tradition, the present watch was offered to him in 1956 by the Italian Olympic Commitee in recognition of his decade long merits in this discipline.
The cherished trophy of the same distinguished private collector since its purchase in 2010, the present "Dato Compax" is furthermore graced by a stunning, original two-tone silvered dial, enhanced by the rarity of the luminous accents and hands. The astoundingly sharp case, evidently unused in decades and never been subject to polishing, impressed with its full proportions, the crisp gold mark underneath the lower right lug and seemingly hardly used the calendar correctors in the band.
The combination of exceptional rarity and condition, provenance and prominent publication in John Goldberger's esteemed reference book 100 Superlative Rolex Watches render this 6036 a benchmark piece for the serious collector striving for the best of the best only.
The before-mentioned letter and Rolex presentation box acquired with the watch in 2010 have been misplaced but will be delivered to the future owner once located.
