Sir Charles Leopold Cust, 3rd Baronet (1864-1931) was a Captain in the Royal Navy serving on HMS Minotaur, Alexandra and Thunderer and also the Equerry in Waiting to King George V. Thomas Woodrow Wilson (1856 –1924) was the 28th President of the United States and in office between 1913 and 1921. Wilson was in the midst of a European tour by December 1918 and Cust accompanied him to France on the King's behalf after his stay at Buckingham Palace. The lot is accompanied by a letter from Cartier dated 13 June 1985 stating that this cigarette case was made in France in 1905 and sold on 17 January 1919 to President Wilson.
