The American jeweller Paul Flato was an early jeweler and designer whose whimsical and original designs were sought after by many of Hollywood's elite. His pieces were owned by actresses such as Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford and Katherine Hepburn, along with socialites Doris Duke and Gloria Vanderbilt. Born in 1900 in Texas, he attended University of Texas, Austin, and moved to New York City in the early 1920s to study medicine, however due to financial hardships he became a watch salesman and soon opened his own jewellery shop on East 57th Street. Flato soon became on of the best known jewellers in the city and he employed some of the top designers including George Headley and Verdura.

His pieces were often in platinum and diamonds and he enjoyed the motif of flowers and scrolls. He also developed a whimsical side with unusual examples like a gold foot with ruby toe nail which was designed for a well-known dancer of the time. The following two pieces were produced in the 1970's when Flato lived and worked in the Zona Rosa in Mexico City. He opened a store in the fashionable district at Amberes 21. He remained at this location until approximately 1990 when he returned home to Texas and passed away in Forth Worth in 1999.
