This watercolour is one of Rackham’s earliest known works. It is dated 1889 and was executed whilst he was still at the Westminster Fire Office and living in Wandsworth - well before finding fame as an illustrator and having only started evening studies at Lambeth School of Art in 1884. A similar early work, ‘Winter - In the woods’ also dated 1889, was sold at Sotheby’s in December, 2013 for £3,000. Another view of view of Wimbledon dated 1892 was sold at Sotheby’s in July 1993.
