According to former Aperture editor Michael Hoffman, Strand felt that so few of his original prints existed that the photographer agreed late in life to allow four portfolios to be produced. The first two portfolio volumes were published by Aperture before Strand's death; either volume 3 or 4 contained The White Fence. Strand did produce this print, which was acquired by Light Gallery in 1978 from the Estate executed by Hazel Strand and (at that time) Michael Hoffman. Hoffman believed the print to have been made in the 1950s/1960s, and while he did not know how many other prints there were in existence, he believed they were very rare given Strand's dislike of working in the darkroom.
