Gustave Le Gray’s, Brig on the Water, 1856, was one of the most celebrated and widely distributed photographs of the 19th century. The work caused a sensation; so much so that the artistic power of Le Gray’s seascapes went on to influence certain Impressionist artists including Claude Monet. Le Gray generally overcame the difficulty of capturing both sea and sky by successfully combining two negatives. It has been suggested that Brig on the Water was in fact achieved on a single negative – a triumph and evidence at that time of Le Gray’s technical mastery of his medium.
