'The bird is the summing up of all my art - it is more than painting.' (Georges Braque)
The theme of the bird was of particular importance to Braque in his final decade. It was a subject that he revisited more than forty times in his graphic work - either as illustrations for books, or as lithographs - which held a great imaginative appeal with him until his death in 1963. These images do not relate to any specific species but are rather an archetypal image that symbolised the boundless spirit of Braque in these later years. To him they symbolised the link between sky and earth, between the infinite and the human condition.
