'CALM is part of an ongoing series in which rather than drawing on the paper I have drawn in it. The idea is to make a field that while not using perspective nevertheless has a feeling of depth and continuation. I wanted to simply leave a surface of marks that in their syncopation not only refer to the surface of water but to a sense of continuum. My drawings have evolved towards dispersing the subject and inviting a kind of reverie or ‘dreaming with the eyes open’ within myself during the act of drawing and also in anyone looking at it afterwards. Rather than identifying a figure against a ground in these drawings you float in a suggestion of endlessness: space and time without edge or limit. This is less, then, about the depiction of an object or the description of an event but an idea about immersion in time and space as both a perceptual act and creative activity'
