At the time, Cartier Paris, Cartier London and Cartier New York were operated separately as they were in the hands of different owners. The designers drew inspiration from a Cartier model Baignoire Allongée which had melted in a fire and ressembled coincidentally to the famous “limp” watch in a painting entitled “ The Persistence of Memory” by Salvador Dali, the famous surrealistic painter who reached his pinnacle in the 1930’s and 1940’s. Modern variations were reintroduced in the early 1990s as limited editions with a special Crash deployant buckle. An example of a Cartier Crash watch is illustrated in Le Temps de Cartier by Barracca, Negretti & Nencini, p. 295. Examples set with pink diamonds are particularly rare as in the present lot. For other examples of the Cartier Crash, please see Lots 2531 and 2596 in this sale.
