This work will be included in the forthcoming online catalogue raisonné Paul Cézanne's watercolors, under the direction of Walter Feilchenfeldt, David Nash and Jayne Warman.
This drawing after Pigalle's marble sculpture Amour embrassant l'Amitié (Musée National du Louvres, Paris, inv. no. RF 297), is closely related to Cézanne's drawing of the same name which is in the collection of the Louvre (Venturi 1334; Musée National du Louvres, Cabinet des dessins, inv. no. RF 29933).
The present work stems from the Quatrième Carnet (pp. XXV-XXVI) which is one of a group of sketchbooks that Venturi dates to the period between 1879 and 1895. There is an indication in the dating of the third carnet that suggests it was executed in 1894, and therefore it seems likely that this work from the fourth carnet dates from the mid-1890s. Chappuis agrees with Venturi's dating of circa 1895, whilst Rewald dates Deux fruits between 1895-1890.
