Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, Marie-Hélène Bigar immigrated to the US in 1939 where after attending Radcliffe College, she married Guy Weill, also a native of Switzerland. Becoming true partners in art and intellect, they embarked on a lifetime journey of collecting and studying the art that caught their eye, primarily Abstract Impressionism and later Asian art. Inspired by her love for Asian art, Marie-Hélène served as a docent at The China Institute and then went on to become a lecturer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Marie-Helene and Guy saw collecting as an essential means of engaging with the world: “For us,” the couple stated simply, “art is, and always has been, life.” In addition to the Weills’ important Southeast Asian and Post-War art collection, Christie’s is proud to offer choice pieces of jewelry that reveal the Weills’ sharp eye for the playful and visually interesting, as evidenced in Lots 38 and 39, as well as their affinity for timeless design, seen in Lots 40, 41 and 42.
