When Hubert de Givenchy received this pedestal table as a gift from Gustav Zumsteg, it was his first piece by Diego Giacometti. He asked Zumsteg to introduce him to the artist. Zumstag arranged a meeting at Diego’s studio in Rue Hyppolite Maindron in the 14th arrondissement of Paris. Monsieur de Givenchy then discovered a man wearing a trilby hat, a cigarette butt in his mouth, hands covered in plaster, of great humility and extremely kind. He was fascinated by his immense talent, soon became his friend and one of his biggest patrons.
