Brooklyn-based artist Eddie Martinez in Warning Signal (Lot 32), draws inspiration from a wide range of sources including
popular culture to Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism.
Applying his understanding of the complex transactions of representation to the making of art, he evolved a unique
signature filled with echoes of other signatures yet that is unquestionably his own. In Warning Signal (Lot 32), Martinez
is obsessed with adding and cancelling layer upon layer as though he is organising his thoughts physically on the canvas. "Sometimes an idea will work its way into a drawing... I don't know ... I don't really make plans for it much. I usually just start it. The ideas come at different stages throughout the process." (Sasha, ed., "Interview: Eddie Martinez," April 2009)
