While Rolex offered a range of Day-Date and Datejust models with stone dials, including lapis lazuli, marble, various hardstones, opal, coral and malachite, the black onyx dial is perhaps the most recognizable for its unadorned starkness. With its endless black, absence of hour makers and minimal printing to the surface, the examples fitted with this particular dial take on an almost abstract quality where time rather than being specific, becomes an approximate value.

This particular example is notable not only for is clear and captivating dial, but also for its incredibly sharp case retaining its original finish and strong lugs indicating that the watch has been well cared for throughout its life
