The present lot Reference PAM00276 is the first lateral tourbillon model launched in 2007 by Panerai in a limited edition of 100 pieces and remains one of the most complex timepieces ever produced by Panerai.
In traditional tourbillons, the cage containing the balance rotates perpendicular to that of the base of the movement, usually making one complete rotation each minute. This Luminor 1950 Tourbillon model distinguishes itself by the distinctive positioning of the axis of rotation of the tourbillon cage which is parallel to the base of the movement, thus allowing the balance to rotate 360 degrees upon the lateral axis and not the horizontal one.
A masterpiece of mechanical complexity, the manual wound movement consists of 239 parts; the three mainspring barrels allowing a 6-day power reserve, its status being shown on the power reserve indicator on the back of the watch. The watch is also equipped with a GMT function indicating a second time zone.
