Né à Rio de Janeiro d’un père brésilien et d’une mère argentine, Sergio Camargo se tourne dès le plus jeune âge vers l’art et la sculpture en s’inscrivant en 1946 à l’Academia Altamira de Buenos Aires où il reçoit l’enseignement des artistes Emilio Pettorutti et Lucio Fontana. Ce premier contact avec l’art est fondamental pour lui puisque Fontana est alors en pleine recherche sur le concept de spatialisme et parraine la rédaction du fameux Blanco Manifesto qui sera publié cette année-là. Fort de cette première expérience, Camargo se rend en France en 1949 afin d’étudier la philosophie à la Sorbonne, notamment auprès de Gaston Bachelard. Il y fait la connaissance de sculpteurs qui vont profondément modeler son œil, à l’image de Arp, Laurens, Vantongerloo et surtout Brancusi dont il fréquente l’atelier et qui va opérer chez lui une réelle prise de conscience quant à la question du volume et de l’approche du matériau. Progressivement, son travail s’oriente ainsi vers des formes abstraites épurées où il expérimente la relation entre espace et forme. Après des allers-retours avec le Brésil, il installe son atelier à Malakoff en 1961, qu’il ne quittera qu’en 1974 pour rejoindre son pays natal. S’intégrant rapidement à la scène parisienne, il participe à plusieurs expositions collectives et reçoit notamment le prix international de sculpture à la Biennale de Paris de 1963. A cette occasion, il présente ses tout premiers Reliefs qui vont caractériser son travail. En effet, il introduit alors une rupture dans son œuvre par l’emploi de petits cylindres en bois qu’il découpe et assemble sur la surface peinte en blanc. Radicale, cette nouvelle technique lui offre la possibilité de trouver sa propre voie qui se détache des recherches menées par ses compatriotes Lygia Clark, Mira Schendel ou Hélio Oiticica mais également des tenants de l’art cinétique naissant que sont Victor Vasarely, Carlos Cruz-Diez ou Jesús Rafael Soto. Il s’associe pendant un temps au Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV) qui vient de voir le jour et qui réunit notamment Julio Le Parc, François Morellet ou encore Vera Molnar. Aux côtés de cette nouvelle génération qui explore les limites de la sculpture et de la peinture, il expose notamment chez Denise René qui devient la galerie de référence de cette scène artistique. La reconnaissance internationale ne tarde d’ailleurs pas à venir puisqu’il participe en 1966 à la Biennale de Venise où une salle entière est consacrée à ses œuvres.
Profondément novatrice, l'œuvre de Camargo – à l’image de Sans titre (Relief No. 353) – s’appuie sur le rapport que l’artiste introduit entre les volumes qu’il crée et la perception changeante que le spectateur peut en avoir. En effet, selon l’angle de perception, une diagonale apparait, traversant la composition en une rupture nette de ce rythme labyrinthique qui recouvre la surface. « Ce processus a amené le matériau du sculpteur (bois) et la lumière dans une nouvelle relation, une sorte de relation réciproque dans laquelle la matière est considérée comme fonction de la lumière et la lumière est perçue comme une fonction de la matière » écrit à ce propos Guy Brett. Dans la lignée des recherches de Fontana qui se répercutent autant dans le courant du Spatialisme comme chez Enrico Castellani ou dans le Groupe Zéro, à l’instar de Günther Uecker, Camargo produit une œuvre qui s’anime et s’évade de la surface plane traditionnelle de la toile. Ses compositions sont des invitations à appréhender différemment l’espace de l'œuvre d’art, à laisser le regard découvrir la réalité changeante de leurs volumes. Ainsi qu’il aimait à le rappeler : « le rationalisme est la production la plus radicale de la fantaisie ».

Armed with this first experience, Camargo travelled to France in 1949 to study philosophy at the Sorbonne, mainly with Gaston Bachelard. There he befriended several sculptors who would profoundly infuence his eye, such as Arp, Laurens, Vantongerloo and above all Brancusi whose studio he visited and who would develop in him a real awareness of volume and the approach to the material. His work thus gradually shifted towards pure abstract forms in which he experimented with the relationship between space and form. After journeys back and forth to Brazil, in 1961 he set up his studio in France, at Malakoff, only leaving it in 1974 to return to his native country. Quickly becoming part of the Paris art scene, he participated in several group exhibitions including being awarded the international sculpture prize at the 1963 Paris Biennale. On this occasion, he presented his very first Reliefs that would characterise his work. Indeed, he introduced a break with his earlier work by using small wooden cylinders that he cut and assembled on a white painted surface. This new and radical technique gave him the opportunity to fnd his own path that broke away not only from the investigations explored by his compatriots Lygia Clark, Mira Schendel and Hélio Oiticica but also from the disciples of the nascent kinetic art, Victor Vasarely, Carlos Cruz-Diez and Jesús Rafael Soto. He was associated for a time with the Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel (GRAV) that had just been formed and which included, among others, Julio Le Parc, François Morellet as well as Vera Molnar. Alongside this new generation exploring the limits of sculpture and painting, in particular he exhibited at the Denise René gallery, which became the benchmark of this art scene. International recognition was not long coming for in 1966 he participated in the Venice Biennale where a whole room was devoted to his work.
Profoundly innovative, Camargo’s work – like Untitled (Relief No. 353) – is based on the relationship that the artist introduced between the volumes he created and the changing perception that the viewers might have of it. Indeed, depending on the angle of view, a diagonal appears to traverse the composition in a clear break with the labyrinthine rhythm that covers the surface. “This process brought about a new relationship between the sculptor’s material (wood) and the light, a sort of reciprocal relationship in which the material is thought of as a function of light and light is perceived as a function of the material” writes Guy Brett on this subject. In line with Fontana’s researches that are echoed as much in the Spatialism movement as in Enrico Castellani’s work or in the Groupe Zéro, like Günther Uecker, Camargo produced work that is animated and escapes the traditional fat surface of the canvas. His compositions are invitations to understand the space of the art work diferently, to let the eye discover the changing reality of their volumes.
